Alien species The red alga Polysiphonia senticulosa originates from the North-Pacific region. This alga reached Europe through transportation with cultured oysters or through attachment on hulls of ships. This species was observed for first time along the Belgian coast on 26th March 2001, in the sluice-dock at Ostend. This red alga is most commonly found growing attached to other algae, such as wireweed Sargassum muticum and felt-alga Codium fragile. However the species can also be found growing on hard substrates (quays, ropes, shellfish,…) and in tidal pools. [details]
